Meet the Team

Adam established The Greenhouse Effect in 2001 and has spent the past 25 years building the business around practical knowledge, trusted advice and first-hand experience. His ethos has always been to test, use and understand the products we sell, with the company’s working grow room playing an important part in putting that into practice.

His experience extends well beyond the shop floor. As Company Director of Growing Made Easy Ltd from 2005 to 2015, Adam designed, manufactured and sold the O2XS dissolved oxygen grow system. As Director and Chief Operating Officer of Trees4Good and Green Energy Plantations Ltd, he worked predominantly in South East Asia, designing, building and running large-scale hydroponic nurseries to propagate plants for the biodiesel industry. He also provided consultancy through Jatropha Plant Science Ltd between 2007 and 2012, alongside product design consultancy for manufacturers in the grow systems and lighting markets.

Today, Adam brings that wealth of experience to The Greenhouse Effect, sharing his knowledge with customers, the team and sons Tom and Ben as they take on greater responsibility in the family business. Still happiest getting stuck in, he can be found helping in the warehouse or serving at the trade counter. With a memory like an elephant and a knack for getting to the bottom of a growing problem, he’s always worth asking!

With a degree in Psychology and a background in advertising sales, Kath has been part of The Greenhouse Effect’s story from the beginning, supporting Adam’s ventures and keeping the UK business running while raising their two sons. With Tom and Ben now grown up and working in the business, she’s proud to see the next generation helping shape its future.

Kath oversees the administration side of the business, working closely with the team to keep things running smoothly behind the scenes. Her mantra is still “communication is key”, and she’s never afraid to ask questions or fight your corner when needed—occasionally embracing her “inner Karen” along the way!

A keen photographer and devoted dog lover, Kath has captured many of the business’s moments over the years, including much-loved photos of Coco and now Scooby. Every dog visiting the shop with their owner can still count on the warmest welcome from her.

Joining us in January 2022 as General Manager, Dave, a chartered accountant since 2004, comes with a significant amount of experience in finance. Prior to joining The Greenhouse Effect, Dave was for 7 years the financial director of the European operations of an international asset management and construction consultancy (approx. 700 people, £80m turnover and 8 countries). Dave joins our growing team to support the company to diversify and grow its offerings, in particular in the agricultural and horticultural sectors. In addition to overseeing the business administration, Dave will work closely with the directors to appraise and implement strategies for growth.

Senior Sales Manager Andy joined us in 2012, with previous experience within the industry he also comes with years of practical knowledge. Heading up our retail team Andy provides a steady hand with a wealth of knowledge to impart to both customers and our other team members. Want to know why something is happening with your plants? Helen joined us August 2023, taking responsibility for customer service, web orders and dispatch.

With 36 years of working in customer service she brings with her a wealth of experience that enables her to provide the best customer service experience in the industry.

She loves working within a team, building relationships, practicing honesty and showing empathy.

Digital E-commerce & Marketing, Ryan joined our ever-expanding team in 2021. Ryan is responsible for maintaining and updating our website to ensure the best user experience and for managing our marketing campaigns and social media.

Been with us since he was born! A hard worker and chip off the old man’s block. He has learnt the business from the bottom up, having worked in each department at various stages of his educational journey. Returning to us full time since receiving his First-degree honours at Solent University he comes with an extensive knowledge of products, a passionate love of the industry and a desire to drive the company forwards for another generation.

It’s all about keeping it in the family! Also with us since he was born, this lad has been dragged in to work since he was little. He, like his brother, is learning the business from the bottom up and looks forward in the future to taking over the business and taking it to new heights. With regular in-house training and responsibility for the grow room Ben has hands on experience of using products on a daily basis and will be your first port of call when visiting our premises.

Having first joined us whilst studying for his A Levels, Tom continued working with us throughout university. Now a full-time member of the team, he has taken on a new role, helping oversee the day-to-day running of our warehouse and supporting the team with sales.

Rhiannon is one of the newest members of our web packing team, helping to ensure your orders are carefully checked, securely packed and dispatched to the high standards you expect from GHEDirect. Outside work, she loves baking bread and even livestreams her baking sessions so others can follow along. Whether it’s a parcel or a fresh loaf, it’s all about getting the finished product just right!

Scooby joined the family in April 2025, bringing a new chapter to a story that hadn’t had the happiest beginning. Originally from Romania, he was brought to England but spent his early life outside, without the love or socialisation every dog deserves, until he was two and a half.

After eight weeks of residential training, Scooby was paired with Kath and found his forever home. He’s since made one important change to company operations: Mum now works from home! These days, he spends his time relaxing nearby and supervising the home office, finally enjoying the comfort, company and love he always deserved.

Polly comes to work with Dave every day and takes her office support duties very seriously! You’ll often hear her “welcoming” customers from upstairs or spot her perched in the large office window, soaking up the sunshine and keeping an eye on proceedings. A little bundle of fun, Polly brings plenty of smiles and welcome company to the upstairs team. Whether she’s offering a little moral support or providing a moment of distraction, she’s a much-loved member of the GHEDirect family.

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our beloved dog Coco, who died peacefully in her sleep. R.I.P. Coco 2014-2024 🐾❤️
