Our Visit to PhytoBalance Farms

We recently had the pleasure of paying a visit to our friends and good customers PhytoBalance, a local producer of the healthy organic super-food Microgreens.
Based in Milton Keynes, this recent startup has already begun to flourish into a truly inspirational brand.
PhytoBalance not only produces extremely healthy food, but they also support the local community by working with some very worthy charities.
Having offered consultation to PhytoBalance Farms since its inception, it was great to go and see their facility for ourselves and find out how they’ve been getting on! 🙂
Let’s dig a little deeper…
What is PhytoBalance?
PhytoBalance is a forward-thinking company located in Milton Keynes that use environmentally safe methods (with low carbon miles) to produce Microgreens, an extremely healthy nutrient-packed superfood.
Microgreens are essentially the seedlings of vegetables and herbs.
PhytoBalance have increased the availability of microgreens to the local community, both to the end consumer and to local businesses and restaurants.
Since the original concept of PhytoBalance and their microgreens production facility, the business has evolved into a brand that has a whole range of nutritious healthy foods available, including salad boxes and drinks, that not are not only really good for you but also taste great too!

Ok… let’s talk about Microgreens…
So what exactly are Microgreens?
Microgreens are young seedlings of edible vegetables and herbs, harvested within two weeks of germination just after the cotyledon leaves (the embryonic part which holds on to fuel for further growth) have developed with one set of true leaves. Microgreens are a potent source of essential nutrients, minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants, and are rich in chlorophyll.
Microgreens are considered an emerging type of superfood/specialty vegetable and have become increasingly popular among gardeners, home growers, restaurants, and kitchens.

Question & Answer Time
We sat down with Dean from PhytoBalance and asked him some questions…
We currently produce 20 varieties of microgreens.
It takes a total of 14 days from seed to harvest.
At the moment we harvest twice a week.
We have been established for 1 year.
We sell our microgreens and combo boxes direct to consumers on our website and via our mail-order subscription service. We also sell to local restaurants and health clubs.
We have a 5-star hygiene rating and are recognized by the Vegan Society and the Soil Association.
We will be going into mushrooms and organic fruit and veg in the near future, watch this space!
We also plan to set up a charity to tackle food waste.
PhytoBalance’s Charity Work
On the subject of charity work as mentioned earlier, PhytoBalance does a lot of work within the local community, lending their kitchen to local charities over the weekends.
Their generosity doesn’t stop there as PhytoBalance donates over 100 salads a week to charities such as the Homeless Refugees Charity, Salvation Army, and MKACT supporting domestic violence victims.
