The Grow Room Graveyard: Common Mistakes That Can Kill Your Plants
Keep Your Plants Out of the Grow Room Graveyard This Halloween
A drooping plant, crispy leaf tips and a tray of struggling seedlings can make your growing space feel a little spooky. But there’s usually a practical explanation behind the damage.
This Halloween, we’re looking at common growing mistakes and the checks that can help you avoid them. Whether you grow vegetables, herbs or houseplants, a few changes can give your plants a better chance.
1. Watering without checking first
A watering schedule is a useful reminder, but it shouldn’t replace checking the growing medium. Plants don’t always use water at the same rate, especially when light levels and temperatures change.
Wilting can mean a plant is too dry, but it can also happen when roots are struggling in wet compost. Check moisture and drainage before reaching for the watering can again.
In hydroponics, check that water delivery and root aeration match the system’s design. Roots sitting in nutrient solution need different care from roots growing in a pot of compost.
2. Adding more feed to every problem
It’s easy to assume a pale or slow growing plant needs more nutrients. However, poor light, unsuitable temperatures, root problems and incorrect pH can also affect growth.
Adding extra feed without checking can make diagnosis harder. Follow the nutrient manufacturer’s guidance for your crop, growing medium and growth stage.
For hydroponic growers, pH and EC readings help you understand the solution you’re supplying. EC indicates dissolved salt levels; it doesn’t identify a particular deficiency. Keep meters clean and follow their calibration instructions.
3. Leaving plants in the shadows
A spot that worked well in summer may offer less useful light in autumn. Check new growth for stretching and look at how daylight actually reaches your plants.
For propagation trays that need extra light, a Linkable LED Light & Stand Kit is one option to consider. Choose lighting around the space and plants, then follow the fixture’s positioning guidance.
4. Guessing the temperature
How comfortable the room feels to you doesn’t tell you everything about conditions around the plants. Check temperatures near the canopy and, where relevant, in the root zone.
Seed trays on cold surfaces may benefit from controlled bottom heat. A Root+ Heat Mat Thermostat can regulate a compatible mat using its temperature probe. Set conditions according to the plants you’re propagating.
5. Missing the early warning signs
Make inspections part of your watering routine. Look beneath leaves, around new shoots and at the growing medium. Record changes rather than making several adjustments at once.
Check pumps, timers and irrigation outlets too. A disconnected tube or missed watering cycle can cause trouble even when the feed is correctly mixed.
Give your plants a fresh start
Before replacing equipment or buying another bottle, identify what needs improving. A useful first check is moisture, drainage, light, temperature and, for hydroponics, the nutrient solution.
