The Growroom – Tobacco in DWC II

Welcome back to The Growroom for part two of our latest grow diary, in which we have been growing Tobacco plants from cuttings using a Deep Water Culture (DWC) system.

Quick Recap: What is Deep Water Culture?

Deep Water Culture is a popular hydroponic method where a plant’s roots are suspended in a highly oxygenated, nutrient-rich solution that provides as much water as they require.

This technique actually requires less water than traditional irrigation as there is less evaporation and there are very few waste products apart from the plant’s roots and a small amount of media.

Where we left off in Part 1 of our Tobacco in DWC Grow Diary

Previously in the grow room…

We left off in part one of our Tobacco in DWC Grow Diary with our Tobacco plant having just made its way into our DWC system. At this stage, we were watering our Tobacco plant from the top down until our roots managed to find their way into the nutrient solution.

Stage 3

Our next photo was taken just 4 days after Stage 2… and look how quickly the roots of the tobacco have developed using our Deep Water Culture system.

Stage 4

A week later we see even more Root Development in our Tobacco plant…

As the root system continues to develop we can increase the EC to 1.2, the pH will stay around 5.7.

Stage 5

Another week later and let’s see how our Tobacco plant is getting on… the roots are really coming on nicely…

Stage 5

For our final week of this grow diary we take a lot at the root development on our Tobacco…. and here you have it, lovely full healthy roots, the Deep Water Culture system definitely done the job!

Thanks for following, we will be doing another grow diary soon! Let us know if you have any suggestions or products or equipment you would like us to demonstrate… [email protected]
