Growroom – Moruga Scorpion Chillis

Moruga Scorpion Chillis Pt 3

We left our chilli seedlings at the end of the last blog to root through our 4″ Rockwool cube, as you can see we added a small piece of sheeting around each stem to stop algae from forming on the blocks (light = algae).

Once the first root starts to come through the cubes we are ready to move on to the next stage – setting them in their chosen grow system:

  • We will be using the >Origin Duo slab system with 2 x Rockwool slabs
  • Firstly we need to soak and buffer our Rockwool slabs to a pH of 5.5 and an EC of 1.2. NOTE do not take off outer wrap
  • Once fully saturated, cut drainage slits in the wrap and turn slabs over so slits are on bottom
  • On the top side of the slab, cut an X the size of the 4″ block, you can then open out the X to sit the block on the slab, rockwool to rockwool.
  • To give a little more stability to the block and to stop any light hitting the rockwool, we taped the ‘X’ flaps to the outside wrap of the rockwool cube.
  • The nutrient solution, which sits in the tank under the slabs, is set to a pH of 5.7 and an EC of 1.2
  • All Origin Duo’s come with a water pump to enable the water to be circulated through the dripper line. We plugged this pump into an Imperium timer to manage the amount of time that nutrient solution is delivered to the plant.
  • Our Imperium timer has initially been set to 1 x 15mins dosage per day.
  • Whilst the plants ‘bed in’ to their new surroundings, we placed the dripper down the side of each cube to allow the nutrient solution to get directly to the new roots and give them a chance to get all the goodness out of the nutrient solution.
  • We also chose to add an air stone with Hailea air pump to the tank to keep the solution aeriated constantly.
  • Because we have extremely hard water and don’t want the drippers to have any chance of blocking, we have chosen to use the Floraflex caps.
  • This means we can remove the blue dripper on the end of the line and attach the line itself to the Floraflex cap allowing for a more even distribution of solution over the block and reduces the chance of any blockages in the dripper.
  • This is also a good time, whilst plants are small, to set up any plant supports required going forward.
  • In this instance, we were able to use some spare grow tent poles to create a frame, on to which we spread our pea netting across.
  • The plants as they grow, will grow through the plant support netting, providing the plant with all the support it needs – we have provided 2 levels of pea netting.
  • 2 weeks later and our Moruga scorpion chillis are really kicking on.
  • 2 weeks on from that and they have filled out and started to flower.
  • To encourage flowering we are feeding them Chilli Focus @ 10ml per Litre
  • We have also chosen to give our chilli’s an additive to help ‘boost’ its strength and resistance to pest and disease as chilli’s can be susceptible to this.
  • At a rate of 0.25ml per Litre, we are adding Buddhas Tree Solar Green Power which not only helps improve a plants immune system and increases its resistance to pests and disease, but also makes the pH more stable.

In our next edition of The Growroom we’ll get to see the fruits of our labour.
