Keep Your Plants Cool This Summer

As we enter peak summer and the hottest days of the year so far, we’re going to take a look at a selection of essential products that we recommend to help you keep your plants cool and prevent them from getting heat stress, and deal with higher temperatures in your grow room.

Here are our top summer product recommendations…

Temperature Controllers

A product we highly recommend investing in during the hot summer months is a temperature controller, as now more than ever it’s important to keep your grow room temperature under control.

The temperature controller we recommend is the SMS TEMP Protector MK2, and we can’t talk highly enough about this easy-to-use and very handy little controller!

Should your grow room overheat, rather than your plants suffering the consequences, the Temp Protector will automatically switch off a number of lights in your room to allow the temperature to drop back to safe levels.

These controllers are particularly useful in sealed rooms with air conditioning in case of the unit failing or simply as a safety device in case of fans breaking down.

That’s why we say the SMS TEMP Protector controller is an essential piece of kit to help you manage the temperature in your grow room.

Water Chillers

Using a water chiller can help keep your hydroponic nutrient solution cool and the plant’s roots healthy. Cool water can hold more dissolved oxygen than warm water and helps to prevent the spread of water-borne pathogens.

Why use a chiller?

Hydroponic grow systems are one of the fastest and best yielding methods of cultivation but are very sensitive to high water temperatures.

We can deal with these high temperatures by using ice packs or changing nutrient solution regularly, this isn’t always convenient or practical.

Using a quality water chiller such as a Hailea Water Chiller, allows the grower to control the temperature of the nutrient solution.

Features
  • Can be used for both fresh water and seawater (perfect for mineral-rich solutions).
  • Super-refrigeration can decrease the water temperature from 35°C to 18°C rapidly.
  • The micro-computerised control system makes it easy to operate and accurately control.
The over-current and overheat auto-protection system makes it safe and reliable.

One product we highly recommend to help your plants deal with higher temperatures is VitaLink Chill.

What Vitalink Chill does…

✅ Protects plants against heat stress

✅ Helps plants to survive and prosper in hot conditions up to 40 degrees

✅ Can be used preventively or to help rescue your plants when sharp temperature rises occur

VitaLink Chill will protect your plants from the stressful effects of unfavourable environmental conditions. It is formulated to protect plants against heat stress during periods of high temperatures, allowing growers to achieve good results all year round.

VitaLink Chill is an advanced biostimulant for growers who want to achieve maximum yields in a cost-effective manner.

Air Movement Fans

Air movement fans (also referred to as air circulation fans) are a great way to help moderate the temperature of your grow room keeping it cool and also circulate the air in the room to maintain a constantly moving atmosphere.

Fans are an often overlooked grow room staple, providing a multitude of advantages when it comes to the aeration of your plants when growing plants indoors.

Not only do they help to keep your grow room cool and help the air in your grow room to move around freely, extracting hot stale air, but they also prevent hot spots and help circulate C02.

Pro Tip: Don’t blast air directly onto your plants too powerfully, instead opt for a nice gentle consistent breeze. This will also help strengthen plants and help prevent mold issues.

LED Lights

One way to reduce the heat in your grow room is to use LED grow lights. LED lights produce very little heat and run much cooler than traditional grow room lights… so swap your HID lights for LED lights.

LED’s have a lower heat output, better light spectrum, and are dimmable.

What are LED Lights?

LED stands for light-emitting diode they are an advanced technology that converts electricity directly into light using a grid of hundreds of chips (diodes). LEDs produce light when an electrical current is passed through a semiconductor emitting light energy.

Advantages of LED Lights

LED lights run more efficiently as they produce more photons per watt and hence making them cooler. This is better to use in grow rooms as too much heat can reduce the airflow to plants from the increase of moisture and condensation.

Whilst LEDs are already cooler, some models have built-in cooling fans which can help improve the efficiency of the energy and help the LEDs last longer.
